Released in 2011 and limited to just 20 pieces worldwide, the Sailor Rakuyu is an exceptionally rare fountain pen closely associated with the legendary nib master Nobuyoshi Nagahara.
This special edition was created to commemorate Nagahara’s final Pen Clinic event before his retirement, where he personally adjusted nibs for customers.
The pen features a uniquely designed body, completely different from Sailor’s standard production models. The cap is crafted from ebonite, while the barrel is made of resin, giving the pen a distinctive appearance and character.
One of the most fascinating aspects of this edition is that each customer could select their preferred nib at the time of purchase. Options ranged from the legendary Naginata Togi to various specialty nibs, including double-layered and triple-layered designs, all personally adjusted by Nagahara.
This particular example is fitted with the exceptionally unusual Fude de Mannen Emperor nib, combining Sailor’s distinctive bent nib design with the Emperor structure. It offers expressive line variation depending on the writing angle, making it one of the most remarkable features of this pen.
With only 20 pieces ever produced, the Sailor Rakuyu represents an important chapter in Nagahara’s remarkable career. This particular example, featuring the rare Fude de Mannen Emperor nib, is an extraordinary collector’s piece that combines historical significance, unique craftsmanship, and an exceptional writing experience.
