This special Sailor Hotei Bamboo fountain pen is very similar in overall construction to the standard sterling silver version, but it was specially produced and is not a regular production model.
The body is made from natural Hotei bamboo and combined with silver components, retaining the classic appearance of Sailor’s older high-end bamboo fountain pens. Because the bamboo is a natural material, the shape of the nodes, grain, and color vary from piece to piece, giving each pen its own individual character.
The most distinctive feature of this pen is the nib. It is fitted with an old-style Cross Point nib made by Nobuyoshi Nagahara. Rather than using a standard Cross Point construction, this nib was created by taking a Z nib as the base and adding an additional nib layer on top.
This structure preserves the broad, generous ink flow of the Z nib while adding the angle-dependent line variation associated with the Cross Point design. It is a particularly interesting example of Nagahara’s earlier specialty nib work and differs in character from later production versions.
Combined with its special non-standard production background and distinctive details, this pen is considerably more collectible than the regular sterling silver version.
