The Pelikan M1000 Maki-e Seven Treasures was released in 2021 as a worldwide limited edition of 123 pieces. Built on Pelikan's flagship M1000 piston-fill fountain pen, this extraordinary pen is a celebration of Buddhist symbolism and the highest traditions of Japanese maki-e lacquer artistry.

The Seven Treasures

In Buddhist tradition, the Shippō (七宝) refers to the seven precious materials: gold, silver, lapis lazuli, crystal, shell, coral, and agate. Together they represent auspiciousness, abundance, and divine blessing — making this pen not merely a writing instrument, but a talisman of good fortune.

Togidashi Taka Maki-e Technique

The pen is executed in Togidashi Taka Maki-e (polished raised maki-e), one of the most demanding techniques in the maki-e repertoire. In this method, the design is built up in relief through multiple layers of lacquer, then meticulously polished to reveal a surface of extraordinary depth and luminosity. The result is a composition that appears to glow from within.

Rich Materials & Colour

The entire pen surface is lavishly adorned with gold powder and abundant raden (mother-of-pearl) inlay. The colour palette is exceptionally rich and vibrant — the iridescent shimmer of the raden plays against the warm golden ground, creating a visual tapestry of shifting light and colour that evokes the splendour of the seven treasures themselves.
