Namiki Yukari “Kusudama” Maki-e Fountain Pen
The Namiki Yukari Kusudama is an elegant Maki-e fountain pen from Namiki’s Yukari Collection, inspired by the traditional Japanese decorative ornament known as Kusudama.
The Symbolism of Kusudama
Historically, Kusudama were created using aromatic herbs and medicinal plants, later evolving into elaborate decorative arrangements adorned with flowers, colorful cords, and long flowing tassels. In Japanese tradition, they are associated with good health, protection from misfortune, and good fortune.
Maki-e Artistry
Against a deep lacquered background, the intricate Kusudama motif is brought to life through traditional Japanese Maki-e techniques. Delicate flowers, ornamental knots, and graceful ribbons flow across the surface of the pen, enriched with gold powder and layers of colored lacquer. Under changing light, the decoration reveals remarkable depth, brilliance, and fine detail.
Unlike many Namiki designs inspired primarily by landscapes, flowers, or wildlife, Kusudama reflects the refined decorative culture of classical Japan. Its elaborate composition and auspicious symbolism give the pen a particularly elegant and celebratory character.
