About Togidashi Maki-e

Togidashi maki-e is one of the three classical techniques of Japanese maki-e lacquerwork. Gold and silver powders are applied over multiple layers of urushi lacquer, then covered with additional lacquer and polished until the design emerges perfectly flush with the surface — smooth to the touch, yet alive with depth and luminosity. The crushed raden background adds a further dimension: a living, shifting iridescence beneath the maki-e motifs that transforms the pen under different lighting conditions.
