This Nakaya fountain pen showcases the remarkable depth of the traditional Tame-sukashi technique, combining a deep green Tame urushi finish with an elegant peacock feather motif.
Rather than being painted directly on the surface, the peacock feathers are subtly concealed beneath layers of translucent urushi. As the light and viewing angle change, the outlines and delicate eye patterns of the feathers gradually emerge from the deep green lacquer, then seem to disappear again into the darker areas of the finish.
The rich variations of green complement the natural beauty of peacock plumage. Although the peacock motif is inherently decorative and luxurious, the Tame-sukashi technique gives the design a restrained, quiet, and slightly mysterious character.
Unlike conventional maki-e, where the decoration is immediately visible, this piece invites closer observation. The hidden peacock feathers gradually reveal themselves through the lacquer, beautifully expressing the depth, transparency, and subtle craftsmanship characteristic of Nakaya.
