Nakaya Long Writer Aka-Tamenuri Urushi Fountain Pen

The Nakaya Long Writer Aka-Tamenuri is one of Nakaya’s most iconic traditional Urushi fountain pens, beautifully combining Japanese lacquer craftsmanship with the elegance of handcrafted writing instruments.

Featuring Nakaya’s classic Long Writer design, this fountain pen has an elongated, elegant silhouette complemented by a traditional metal clip. Compared to the standard Writer model, the Long Writer offers a more distinctive and slender appearance while maintaining excellent balance and comfort during writing.

The barrel and cap are crafted from ebonite (hard rubber) and meticulously finished using the traditional Japanese Aka-Tamenuri (Red Tamenuri) lacquer technique. This process involves applying a vermilion-red base layer, followed by multiple layers of translucent dark Urushi lacquer, creating a rich and beautifully layered finish.

One of the most fascinating characteristics of Aka-Tamenuri is its remarkable depth and transparency. While the overall appearance is a deep reddish-brown, the vibrant red underlayer becomes visible around the edges of the cap, barrel, and other areas where the lacquer is thinner. Over time, the Urushi may gradually become more transparent, revealing even greater warmth and depth of color.

The pen is equipped with a 14K gold nib, carefully adjusted to provide Nakaya’s signature writing experience, known for its precision, smoothness, and subtle tactile feedback. It uses a cartridge/converter filling system, combining traditional craftsmanship with everyday practicality.

Measuring approximately 170 mm in length, with a diameter of around 15 mm and a weight of approximately 30 g, the Long Writer offers an impressive yet elegant presence in the hand.
